What to expect from the procedure?
Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the world. Drooping eyelids often interfere with eyesight, irritate the eyes and make people look older.
What Else Should You Know About Eyelid Surgery?
If the drooping eyelids are more of an aesthetic problem that does not yet interfere with your vision, it can in some cases be corrected by non-invasive methods – hyaluronic acid injections. This method is most commonly used to raise the eyebrow, which reduces the excess skin on the eyelid. However, if the excess of the skin is really large and it narrows the visual field, surgery may be the only solution. The most eligible method will be recommended by the doctor during the consultation, after examination and in-depth interview.
Whether the operation has to be repeated depends on your individual characteristics. Some results satisfy for the rest of the life, others may need to be repeated after 7-10 years.
The upper eyelid operation can be combined with the correction of the lower eyelids, eyebrow lift or even facelift.
Blepharoplasty is usually performed because the drooping eyelids tend to narrow the visual field and irritate the eyes. For some, this problem arises with age due to age-related processes, as for others it is caused by genetics, when even at a relatively young age, drooping eyelids begin to bother.
A well-done blepharoplasty is practically invisible if the tissues have already healed. The scar usually hides in the natural folds of the eyelids and does not cause any discomfort.
Immediately after the procedure, it is recommended to periodically cool the corrected area with cold compresses. During the first day, cool your eyelids for about 10 minutes each hour, the next day use the cold compress about 4-5 times a day. Eyes should be cleaned very carefully using eye drops and other methods recommended by your doctor. Active physical activity (like running or swimming) as well as weight lifting should be avoided for at least a week. It is also important to avoid eye lenses for at least two weeks and protect your eyes from the sun and wind.
Do not be frightened if swelling and bruising as well as photosensitivity and tearing, also, slight pain or discomfort occur after the procedure. These symptoms usually resolve within a few days.
As with all invasive procedures, there is a slight risk of complications. These may include infection, dryness and irritation of the eyes, discoloration of the skin at the incision site, rarely – inability to close the eyes completely. Some complications are associated with surgery itself (for example, due to anesthesia or poor blood clotting).
